Spider-Man Webs A Win

Weekend Recap: 7/6-8/2012

It’s late, I know, I’ve been busy, sorry! Anyways...

The Amazing Spiderman (review here) proved that a reboot can come out shortly after the last entry in a previous series and still be successful (something I’m sure Warner Brothers will be considering now that the current Batman series is about to come to an end), earning $35 million on its first day of release, $23 million on the 4th of July, $15 million on Thursday, and then took first place over the weekend with another $62 million.

So far the film has made $201.6 million, putting its worldwide gross (as of Monday) at $341.2 million.

Ted (review here) took second place for the weekend with $32.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $119.8 million. With a budget of merely $50 million, Ted is definitive hit for Universal and Seth MacFarlane.

Brave (review here) grossed $19.6 million for third place and a domestic sum of $174 million.

Oliver Stone had his third biggest opening ever (after Wall Street 2 & World Trade Center) as Savages (review here) brought in a decent $16 million for fourth place.

Magic Mike took in $15.6 million for fifth place and Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection (review here) earned $10.2 million for sixth place, while Madagascar 3 (review here) and Katy Perry: Part of Me each grossed over $7 million for seventh and eighth place, respectively.

Ninth and tenth place were taken by more indie films in significantly less theaters. Wes Anderson continues to find success with Moonrise Kingdom (review here) as it took ninth place with $4.5 million. Meanwhile, To Rome with Love (review coming soon!), Woody Allen’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning Midnight in Paris, rounded out the Top Ten with $3.5 million.

Internationally, Ice Age 4 has been out for a couple weeks and has brought in almost $200 million. It opens this weekend in the U.S.

Here’s a snapshot of the Top Ten Weekend Films domestically:
