Expendables Execute Weak Weekend

Weekend Recap: 8/24-26/2012

It was a SLOW weekend this past week. Out of all of the newly released films, the most successful of them debuted to only seventh place at the box office. This made the past few days a weekend of "leftovers," as audiences simply caught up on older movies they hadn't seen yet or perhaps wanted to see again.

Leading the slow-moving pack was The Expendables 2 (review here) in its second weekend, grossing $13.4 million. It is the first R-rated action film to have two back-to-back #1 weekends since the first Expendables came out in 2010. Made for approximately $100 million, the sequel is still trailing the original film (despite being much better!).

The Bourne Legacy (review here) continues to do well, taking second place for the second week in a row with $9.3 million for a domestic total of $85.5 million and worldwide total of $129.1 million.

In third place, ParaNorman earned $8.6 million, while The Campaign, The Dark Knight Rises (review here), and The Odd Life of Timothy Green each brought in over $7 million for fourth, fifth, and sixth place, respectively. TDKR continues to near the $1 billion mark, now with a worldwide total of $941.2.

The surprise breakout of the newly released films was the conservative, anti-Obama documentary, 2016: Obama's America, which debuted to the tune of $6.5 million in seventh place, putting it just ahead of Premium Rush in eighth place with $6 million. In only 1,091 theaters, 2016 had a per-venue average of $5,957, the best of any of the wide released films.

Hope Springs (review here) grossed $5.7 million for ninth place and Hit and Run rounded out the Top Ten with $4.5 million in tenth place.

Meanwhile, the new film The Apparition premiered outside of the Top Ten with $2.8 million from 810 theaters for a decent theater average of $3,456.

More impressive were the films Samasara, which opened in two theaters to make $73,800 (a per-theater average of $36,900!), and the much-talked-about Sleepwalk with Me, which broke the New York's IFC Center's house record with a $65,000 gross (from only 1 location!!!). Obviously, both of these films far exceeded the per-venue average of any other film this weekend.
