Snow White and the Huntsman (review here) took the biggest bite out of the box office apple this weekend, earning a surprising $56.2 million. Add that to the $39.3 million it made overseas and its worldwide total has reached $95.5 million.
While that's better than many expected, it's still a far-reach from its $170 million production costs (not counting marketing expenses) and with so many up-coming blockbusters, its not likely to do well enough to be really profitable.
Men in Black 3 (review here) took second place with $28.1 million domestically. Made for $225 million, MIB3 has accumulated a worldwide total of $386.9 million after only two weeks and is likely to end up somewhere between Men in Black 2 ($441.8 million) and the original Men in Black ($589.4 million).
In third place was The Avengers (review here) which continued to do well with another $20.5 million. The film has made $552.9 million in the U.S. and $802.5 million internationally for an overall total of $1.355 billion. For the records of highest-grossing film both domestically and worldwide, The Avengers trails only Titanic ($658.5 million, $2.185 billion) and Avatar ($760.5 million, $2.782 billion), though in all likelihood it will not catch up to either.
Battleship (review here) took fourth place with over $5 million, while The Dictator (review here), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (review here), and What to Expect When You're Expecting (review here) each earned over $4 million, for fifth, sixth, and seventh place respectively. Marigold Hotel is a surprise hit, having brought in $106 million worldwide.
Dark Shadows and Chernobyl Diaries found themselves in eighth and ninth place, having each grossed over $3 million. The Top Ten were rounded out by the independent film, For Greater Glory, with $1.9 million.
Meanwhile, Prometheus was seen a week before it's U.S. release in 15 overseas markets and took in an impressive $35 million.
