Tight Race on a Short Track

Weekend Recap: 9/21-23/2012

The box office may not have made much money this past weekend, but it still had movie buffs excited because the race to the top was a tight, photo-finish between End of Watch, House at the End of the Street, and Trouble with the Curve.

End of Watch finally pulled ahead to first place with $13.1 million. House at the End of the Street and Trouble with the Curve both trailed closely behind with $12.3 million and $12.2 million, respectively, for second and third place. All three movies are pretty much on par with other films in their genre.

Finding Nemo 3D found itself in fourth place with $9.6 million for a 10-day total of $30.2 million, lower than any recent 3D re-releases.

Resident Evil Retribution (review here), which took first place last weekend, dropped to fifth place as it grossed $6.7 million. Domestically, RE5 has only a total gross of $33.5 million, but a much more impressive $103.4 million foreign gross gives the film a total of $136.9 million.

In sixth place was the bomb of the week, Dredd, which debuted to $6.3 million from 2,506 theaters, while the jewel of the weekend was The Master (review coming soon), which earned $4.4 million from 788 venues, giving it the best per-site average of the Top Ten.

Rounding out the Top Ten were The Possession (review here), ParaNorman, and Lawless (review here), each of which grossed over $2 million for eighth, ninth, and tenth place, respectively.

Meanwhile, The Perks of Being a Wallflower officially opened, after a couple weeks of select showings, in four theaters to the tune of $228,359, giving it the fifth-highest per-location average of the year, at $57,090.
