Audiences Assemble

Weekend Recap: 5/4-6/2012

The Avengers (review here) dominated the weekend box office this week, setting a bunch of new records, so let’s get right to it.

With an enormous $207.4 million take, The Avengers has grossed the highest domestic opening weekend ever (Harry Potter 7 Part 2 is in second place with a distant $169.2 million). Taking in $80.8 million on Friday alone, the film is also the 2nd-highest single day gross of all time. The Avengers is the fastest movie to reach $200 million domestically. Add in international sales, and The Avengers has made $654.8 million in 12 days. The film is also the biggest weekend opening ever in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Central America, Peru, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, and United Arab Emirates. The Avengers also had the biggest weekend ever in IMAX theaters, both domestically and internationally. The film averaged an astounding $47,689 per domestic location.

Whew! Now onto the other films (not that many people saw anything other than The Avengers this weekend!).

Think Like a Man (review here) came in second with $8 million for a total of $73 million so far. The Hunger Games (review here), The Lucky One, The Pirates! Band of Misfits (review here), and The Five-Year Engagement all took in over $5 million for third, fourth, fifth, and sixth place, respectively.

The Raven (review here) and Safe continued to bomb at the box office, each bringing in less than $3 million in their second week of release. Chimpanzee also made a little over $2 million, while The Three Stooges rounded out the Top Ten with $1.8 million.

Meanwhile overseas, Battleship continues to do well, having passed the $200 million mark. The film opens in the U.S. on May 18th.
