Weekend Recap 4/27-29/2012
This past weekend was the calm before the storm as movie-goers largely saved their money in anticipation for this weekend’s The Avengers.
Think Like a Man stayed on top for a second weekend in a row with $17.6 million, bringing its total to $60.5 million. The new stop-motion animation film, The Pirates! Band of Misfits (review here), exceeded box office expectations by taking second place with $11.1 million.
The Hunger Games (review here) and The Lucky One both brought in roughly $10.8 million each to take third and fourth place, respectively. The other new releases this weekend all disappointed, although not surprisingly. The Five-Year Engagement grossed $10.6 million for fifth place, followed by Safe in sixth with $7.9 million and The Raven in seventh with $7.3 million.
The Top Ten were rounded out by Chimpanzee and The Three Stooges, which both took in approximately $5.2 million each, for eighth and ninth place, respectively, and The Cabin in the Woods (review here) in tenth with $4.6 million.
The Avengers was released around the world on Wednesday and between then and Sunday grossed a whopping $178.4 million as the top movie in every market it was released in. My guess is that it will do a bit less domestically when it comes out next weekend.
Here’s a snapshot of the Top Ten weekend films:
